Why I Laugh When People Hate On Community College

Unfortunately, if you search for the term "community college" on Twitter, there are a lot of people who hate on community college. At first, it really bothered me that so many people have a negative opinion of community college. But then, it became funny to me...

I read a tweet by a freshman girl who said, "If you go to community college, don't f*cking talk to me. You're stupid, and I go to a university" or something very similar to that. I took a moment to check out her Twitter profile, and I found out that she goes to a relatively unknown university.

That's when I started to laugh. I'm pretty sure 99% of students, if not everyone, at community college are smarter than this girl. They are paying less tuition, saving money by living at home, and then will most likely transfer to a university way better than the one she is attending. Not to mention, hundreds of community college students transfer to Ivy League universities every year.

It occurred to me that most people are simply uninformed about the tremendous benefits of attending community college. They seem to believe that because community college is easy to get into, it must not be valuable. The truth is that community colleges offer a fresh start for success at extremely low costs, making higher education accessible to everyone. If more people knew the facts from the start, I believe they would make a different choice between community college or university.

As for people who hate on community college, I don't think we can stop it completely. However, we can all help people understand how obtaining an associate's degree at your local community college and then transferring to a top-tier university is a better path. With the rise of community college honors programs and more students learning about community colleges, hopefully fewer people will hate on community college and more people will speak out about their benefits.
